Wellington transport

Wellington hotels

The best way to explore Wellington is on foot. The city is quite compact and walking is most convenient if you have the time (and the appropriate footwear!) However, the public transport on offer is excellent so is another good option if walking is not your thing. The bus service, ‘Stagecoach’, operates between 7am and 11.30pm every day. It offers a day-tripper pass which only costs NZ$5. It is also a good idea, if there are a few of you travelling together, to make use of the group day-tripper pass which costs just NZ$12 for a group of up to 4 people. These passes can also be used on the circular bus service that works on a hop-on-and-off system. This service tours around the most popular sight-seeing spots of the city, running every ten minutes. This is a good option for visitors as you can easily take in a lot of attractions all along the same route.
For an alternative to buses, taxis can be hailed in the street or telephoned; a popular company is Capital Taxis. There is a cable car that connects downtown Wellington with the Botanic Gardens on top of the hill, which is a useful mode of transport and a fun experience rolled into one. The Tranz Metro train service runs between Wellington and the outer regions such as the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast if you wish to travel further out of the city centre.
